Rainier Eye, established in 2023 by Dr. Mary Ferris, is focused on the needs of the community which it serves. We prioritize independently made products, local services, and staff who live in the area. Our clinic environment reflects our love of Northwest nature. We are dedicated to creating a professional and inviting space, and providing the care we would like to receive, and hope you will join us at Rainier Eye!
Optometrist
Dr. Mary Ferris is eager to connect with the community as a new business owner. She has practiced optometry in Olympia since 2009 and was awarded Best of the South Sound: Best Doctor for 2022, 2023, and 2024. She enjoys seeing patients of all ages, fitting contact lenses, and solving optical challenges with creative solutions. Her specialty training is in ocular disease, low vision, and surgical co-management.
Dr. Ferris grew up in Indiana and graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Spanish minor, studied Rainforest Ecology in Costa Rica, and then completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at Indiana University. Her residency training included the VA Hospital in Walla Walla, Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute (PCLI) in Kennewick, and the Centro de Rehabilitación Visual in Guanajuato, México.
In her spare time, she keeps busy by volunteering for VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity,) the Junior League of Olympia, Hope Vision Foundation, the South Sound Reading Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and other local nonprofits. She is often found doing home improvement projects with her husband Scott and paddleboarding with her black Labrador, Pepper.
Optometrist
Upbeat, intuitive, and caring, Dr. Janat Mathew has joined our team to support the needs of the community. With a background in ocular disease including dry eye, contact lens fitting, and surgical co-management, she provides medical eye care as well as vision exams. She values the importance of understanding each patient’s individual needs and strives to create a comfortable and informative experience for everyone she sees.
Originally from the sunshine state of Florida, Dr. Mathew pursued her undergraduate education at Nova Southeastern University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Her passion for eye health led her to continue her education at the Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, where she earned both a Bachelor of Science in Vision Science and her Doctor of Optometry degree.
During her time in optometry school, Dr. Mathew was actively involved in community outreach, participating in school vision screenings and volunteering with the Special Olympics. One of the most impactful experiences of her training was an internship with the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation in Bethel, Alaska. There, she had the unique opportunity to deliver optometric care to remote villages across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, reinforcing her commitment to accessible, patient-centered care.
After completing her education, Dr. Mathew moved to the Pacific Northwest, drawn by its natural beauty and vibrant communities. She practiced alongside Dr. Ferris in Olympia, and after some time back in Florida, happily returned with her husband.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Mathew enjoys spending time outdoors—hiking, camping, and exploring the scenic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. She also loves experimenting in the kitchen and trying out new recipes. At your next exam, ask her what's been cooking lately!
